| Ballad of an Australian Shepherd |
| BALLAD OF AN AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD |
| written for me by Tony Di Bartolo, my Dad |
| to the tune of "The Acorn Song" |
| I'm an Aussie yes it's true |
| pattern's merle the color's blue |
| summer sky reflects my eyes |
| pounce on ants and chase down flies |
| We like fruit and we like meat |
| gosh all Aussies are so neat |
| first drop my chewie in the bowl |
| then out to the yard and dig a hole |
| I get treats when I do good |
| sure does beat that kibble food |
| rawhide chews and a marrow bone |
| two other dogs I'm never alone |
| I'm an Aussie, I'm no fool |
| when the day's too hot for me |
| this is where I'm bound to be |
| Herding sheep is lots of fun |
| wooly butts after them I run |
| Aussie dogs have such a life |
| free from taxes worry and strife |
| Laying here I get so bored |
| roll on over and chew this cord |
| I can smile and wiggle my butt |
| Mom calls me clown I'm such a nut |
| Imagine I'm a mountain goat |
| long gray fur a double coat |
| four paws on the window sill |
| perching here I stay so still |
| My jaws are strong it's so unreal |
| cut through leather rope or steel |
| hand held shower hose in my way |
| when in the tub I went to play |
| Real dogs don't need a tail |
| help my friends in doggie jail |
| rescue one and take her home |
| lots of licks when back you come |
| Life is sweet oh ain't it grand |
| can't beat an Aussie with a band |
| you'll love an Aussie with all your heart |
| get two or three maybe one to start |
| Velcro dogs we stick like mad |
| if you're not here we feel so sad |
| right by your side is where we'll be |
| you're never alone even when you pee |
| When this Aussie's life is done |
| I'll lay down in the setting sun |
| then the Rainbow Bridge I'll see |
| I'll wait for you to be with me |

| Author's note: This little ditty was written to highlight some of the personality aspects that Australian Shepherds exhibit. Every stanza except for the last one are inspired by actions and behaviors that Eli (AfterHours Blue Moon Eyes) has exhibited. He is a blue-eyed blue merle. As a small pup he used to stalk and eat ants. He eats bananas or hamburgers with equal enthusiasm; has left his chewy at the bottom of the toilet bowl, is a mighty tunneler, lives with two other Aussies, loves to lay down and cool off in his little pool, is learning the job of herding sheep, has chewed through a live electric cord and a steel lined shower massage hose, sits on the window sill like a cat and feels very strongly about Aussie Rescue. (Okay, I feel very strongly about rescue.) The chorus was inspired by a lady waiting at the Vet's office. This person wanted to know what kind of mutt he was. No one here is biased toward pure bred dogs over mixed breeds, also referred to as All Americans or mutts. |
