POEM FOR THE RED CHECKER
written for Zoe by Tony Di Bartolo, my Dad

Satin night
Velvet dawn
Daylight bright
And sharp
Hard and edgy
Glinting like
The blade of a
Sword
Facets on a
Diamond
Our red girl, gold eyes gleaming
Narrow laser beam focus
Fixed on round creamy fleece
Wool hidden sheep
Leaning on the leash
Strained to the end
Tense tight restraint
Gate opens huffing through
A hesitant stop, sit, come
Released she's off, all red
A blur of whining anticipation
Circling, holding, back, wearing
From cone to cone
Stop, sit, come
Exit the gate
Still our red girl
Emerging an HCT
Feeling Grampa Bear's paw prints
How big they really were
